Israel Martinez is one of the most accomplished wrestling coaches in the United States, with a career spanning over two decades. As the founder and head coach of Izzy Style Wrestling since 2005, he has been a driving force in shaping Illinois wrestling and guiding athletes to success at every level, from high school state championships to international and professional titles.
Israel’s journey in wrestling began at the age of 9, under the guidance of his father, Jose Martinez, and the unwavering support of his mother, Betty. As a youth competitor, Israel earned five IKWF state championships and was honored with the Marty Combe and Ron Irwin Outstanding Wrestler Awards.
At West Aurora High School, Israel compiled an incredible 118-1 record and captured three IHSA State Championships (1998–2000). His international accolades include a 3rd-place finish at the Cadet World Championships and a runner-up performance at the Fila Junior World Team Trials. He continued his success at North Idaho College, where he won the NJCAA National Championship at 157 lbs. with a perfect 27-0 record.
Izzy Style Wrestling (2005–Present)
In 2005, Israel founded Izzy Style Wrestling, now recognized as one of the premier wrestling programs in the nation. Over the years, he has coached numerous standouts, including:
- Real Woods – 3x NCAA All-American (Stanford, University of Iowa)
- Jordan Blanton – 3x NCAA All-American (University of Illinois)
- Tony Ramos – NCAA Champion and All-American (University of Iowa)
- Will Lewan – 3x NCAA All-American (University of Michigan) and Cadet World Champion
- Dylan Ragusin – NCAA All-American (University of Michigan)
- Mikey Caliendo – 3x NCAA All-American (North Dakota State, University of Iowa)
- Jack Dechow – NCAA All-American (Old Dominion University)
Izzy Style Wrestling has been a breeding ground for excellence, producing countless NCAA qualifiers, All-Americans, and national champions, as well as athletes who have succeeded at the international level.
During his decade-long tenure as head coach at Montini Catholic High School (2010–2020), Israel continued his tradition of excellence, leading the program to eight IHSA Dual Team State Championships and coaching 35 individual state champions. Under his leadership, Montini consistently earned Top 5 national rankings.
Elite-Level Coaching
Israel’s expertise extends beyond traditional wrestling. He coached Holly Holm throughout her UFC career, including her historic upset over Ronda Rousey, known as “The Kick Heard Around the World.” He also guided Yair Rodriguez from his victory on The Ultimate Fighter to becoming a UFC champion, showcasing his ability to develop fighters into world-class competitors.
Israel has also had a profound impact on the wrestling mat, coaching Kennedy Blades from her IKWF State Finals match to the Olympic finals, where she captured a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. His ability to develop athletes from grassroots to the pinnacle of success is a testament to his dedication and expertise.
As the head wrestling coach for Jon Jones, Israel helped Jones secure eight UFC titles and cement his legacy as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
In addition, Israel founded the Premier National League (PNL), bringing together the nation’s top wrestling clubs to host elite-level events and camps. He also manages Illinois Matmen, the premier website for Illinois wrestling coverage, ensuring the sport’s rich tradition continues to thrive across the state.
Personal Life
Beyond wrestling, Israel is deeply devoted to his family. He and his wife, Melissa, are proud parents to four children: Israel, Nathaniel, Elliana, and Ruby. Whether coaching on the mat, organizing premier events, or spending time with his family, Israel’s passion for wrestling and dedication to the next generation of athletes remain the driving forces behind his success.
